I attended a presentation by the engineering consultants who were working on the bridge before the present closure. They said that, for example, English Heritage wanted purpose-made bolts, which cost over £80 each, and this pushed up the costs to eye-watering levels. Of course the cracks in the pedestals are a much more serious problem. But still, the approach should be, I think, to mend and reinforce with modern materials where they will strengthen the bridge. |
