Ann Rosenberg is right that the content of London's sewers is 95% rainwater and 5% sewage. And it is true that as London has grown we have covered over the green parts and cut down trees which soaked up the rain. But she is not right about the best solution to this problem in the short term: the Thames Tunnel is the only realistic solution. Yes, new buildings have to keep the rain which falls onto their roofs within their boundaries. Yes, rainbutts for existing houses are also part of the answer. Yes, permeable road surfaces would also contribute to the solution. The truth is that we need ALL of these actions. And then, hopefully, London can continue to grow, and we won't have to build an ever bigger and deeper Thames Tunnel in, say, 100 years' time.....
