I roamed Hammersmith riverside and parks c1938 without problems. When i was evacuated I missed Hammersmith and always wanted to get back to it: Rummaging around in the rubbish tip behind the Lyric, jumping the barges under the bridge, going down the dog walk to get to the 'beach' by the Doves, doing the circular walk over the river in Barnes. I did get back to Hammersmith c1947 and started work at Chambons. Then 18 arrived, so I decided to join the RAF for a five stint. Finished the fiver and started college and lived in Notting Hill Gate, Ladbroke Grove, East Finchley, finally living in Blackheath. Then Left for North wales to teach. When I finally visited Hammersmith it had had its heart torn out by a motorway. Great Church lane had lost its community and I was saddened by the vandalism of the roadmakers. I miss Hammarsmith but it is the Hammersmith of the 30's, 40' and 50's that I remember so fondly. I would still visit Hammersmith if it still had its Eel and Pie shop opposite the Gaumont but I see no reason to visit it without its heart. |
